Blue Iceberg, Antarctic, Antarctica

National Geographic Traveller's Intelligent Travel blog have just used my Blue Ice photo in an article about
Antarctica's White Noise

Scientists at the Perennial Acoustic Observatory in the Antarctic Ocean understand this concept, and have bottled the sounds of the Antarctic for the world to appreciate with "an acoustic live stream of the Antarctic underwater soundscape."

Photo Exhibition, Sligo: "Parallel Worlds"

Lough Gur

The enchanted Lough Gur, Limerick

Good grief, Ladies and Gintelmin, it's my first photographic exhibition. It all started with a phone call a couple of weeks ago, from Paul Cunningham at Blue Raincoat Theatre in Sligo, who are about to stage a production of my favourite novel, The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien. Paul asked me to help out spreading the word about the play, and invited me as a guest speaker to a Q&A session at the Factory Performance Space in Sligo on October 18th. Then he mentioned that he'd been checking out my photographs - and the discussion developed to the point that I've got a bunch of 20x13 prints at the framers this morning, no small thanks Mrs. Blather (Heather).

The exhibition, Parallel Worlds, will be running at the Factory from October 16th to November 3rd, and will feature some of my pictures from travels over the last couple of years, with a decidedly otherworldy theme, featuring everywhere from Alaska to Antarctica, and a quick stop at the magical lake of Lough Gur, Co. Limerick along the way.

The exhibition is in partnership with Blue Raincoat's production of Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman, a story of a crime gone awry, a journey into a weird vision of hell in the form of a rural Garda station, and a brief, unrequited love affair between a man and his bicycle. Get a print of this iceberg photograph.

I just got an email from Tokyo-based Irish journalist David McNeill (The Independent, Japan Focus, of a print of one my images on his living room wall. It's a very odd feeling to think that this picture is hanging on a wall in Tokyo. The image is of the "Isle of the dead" iceberg from the Antarctic trip earlier this year.

BTW, I have no idea who the chap on the left is, but I assume he's someone important.

Update: He's Charles Jenkins:

"Charles Jenkins describes the moment in 1965 when he left his US Army post and defected to North Korea as the biggest mistake of his life. In the next 40 years he was beaten, starved and lost his identity. Now free and living in Japan, he granted a rare interview to David McNeill"

Due to popular demand - like everyone who posted the comments Slideshow: Atlantic Wildlife, West Africa thread, Elaine in Greenpeace HQ in Amsterdam has knocked up wallpapers of some photographs from our trip, including dolphins, turtles, terns and a booby (oooh, misbehave!).
