Pilot whales have been in the news a bit this week, because of the strandings off Tasmanian.
All dolphins are whales - but not all whales are dolphins. And pilot whales are actually very large dolphins, at up to 3.5 - 6.5m long and up to 4 tonnes in weight. They can dive down hundreds of metres, where they catch squid and fish. They've very social animals, towards each other that is, but not terribly interactive with humans. So it was a pleasure to hang out beside this pod for a few minutes while they lay on the surface and dallied...

My friend The Heron, again, hanging out behind a fence by the Tolka River. At least this time I had the right lens (Canon 100-400 L IS USM). The Ha'penny Bridge, known later for a time as the Penny Ha'penny Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge built in 1816 over the River Liffey in Dublin, Ireland. Originally called the Wellington Bridge (after the Duke of Wellington), the name of the bridge changed to Liffey Bridge, its official name to this day. It is still commonly known as the Ha'penny Bridge. The toll itself was dropped in 1919; before this there were turnstiles either end of it.

Fallow Deer (Dama dama) stag running across the "15 acres" in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. There's been a herd here since the 17th century. They live completely wild elsewhere in Ireland, and were introduced by the Normans in the 12th century.

I made several quick visits to this temple in December 2008. I was fascinated by the calm and peace in the middle of Seoul's hectic life.
A buddhist monk walks by the Hall of the Great Hero or Daeung-jeon at Jogye-sa Buddhist Temple, Seoul, South Korea. Jogyesa is the main temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and has a important part in Seon Buddhism. Located in Gyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu within in the old city of Seoul.
The greyness of the monk's clothes signify ashes and death.
