FORTEAN TIMES UNCONVENTION 1996
11. WILHELM REICH - AN INTRODUCTION (Kenn Thomas, Steamshovel Press)
“He fought UFO’s in the Arizona desert with his cloudbuster cannon, founded the controversial science of
orgonomy, and died in a US prison into which he had been thrown for scientific heresy.”
- the Unconvention ‘96 brochure’s little blip on Wilhelm Reich.
Kenn Thomas has gone to some way to tracking down various Reich items. He has recovered Reich’s
prison files. Also, he has a copy of Reich’s rare lat book, CONTACT WITH SPACE. Thomas’ copy
actually belongs to cult rock person Alex Chilton.
The Reichian heritage: CHARACTER ANALYSIS (1933)
Cloudbusting
The Reich Museum, Maine.
The fight: CSICOP make fun of Reichists, who fight among themselves. The US government like to
distort what Reich had to say.
Between 1918 and 1933 Reich was a student of Freud in Vienna. He became a Marxist. His concept of
“Thanatos” death got him kicked out of the psychotherapy field. He started sex counselling clinics, and
organizing contraception and abortion etc. He was a German communist until he was expelled in 1933.
He went to Norwat ehre he experimented in orgasms with volunteers. The later anti-Reich smear involved
people from this period. He came up with the “Vegito” theory, which involved body parts being moved,
deep breathing and orgones in the Social Research School in the US which was set up for those fleeing the
Nazis. The orgone is the “aether”. He manipulated orgone in Maine and there is a photographic record of
it. The Orgone Box is human-sized and it apparently helps orgone accumulate. [We were shown some
video testimony and then William S. Burroughs getting into a box!]
Reich thought that cancer was biopathy. The Food and Drug Administration arrested him for refusing an
injunction preventing the production of the Box.
Apart from the Orgone Box, Reich invented the Cloudbuster gun, which disabled UFO’s. While working
with the Cloudbuster, a friend of Reich’s moved some Boxes, and Reich as a result was arrested for
quackery.
The USAF agreed to meet Reich about the Cloudburster. In 1956 Edward J. Ruppelt’s THE REPORT ON
UFO’S was published. Reich said that the Ruppelt book is saying the USAF were given Reich’s studies,
including two videos, filmed two years apart, one in Montana, one in Utah. [We were shown the fuzzy
film of saucer UFO’s in the sky]. Ruppelt said little of Reich’s study that came with the films about UFO
motion. Ruppelt used Reich phraseology in his book, though.
Lou Douglas, a man connected to the Cutler-Twining memo [an unauthenticated “official document”
about the Roswell incident. Twining was supposedly one of the MJ-12], helped set Reich up in Tucsan.
Reich visited Roswell. He mentions passing through the town in CONTACT WITH SPACE.
The “Atoms for peace” Eisenhower speech was written by Cutler. The ideas are allegedly Reich’s. The
Cutler-Twining memo occurred at a time of Reich overtures to Douglas.
Famous journalist Dorothy Kilgallen mentioned cloudbusting - and then she died during a blackout [that
might have more to do with her investigation of the JFK assassination].
Reich’s cloudbusting work and all his books were destroyed.
And the smear campaign continues. For example, it is publicized that Terry Nichols’ brother had a
cloudbuster.
How dangerous are Reich’s views? How right was he?
The temperature difference between the inside and outside of the Orgone Box breaks the second law of
thermodynamics...
