Neil Gaiman

Midnight Days

This is a collection of some of the one-off comics that Sandman-famed Neil Gaiman has scripted over the years. First there’s the Swamp Thing story “Jack In The Green”, from 1986, one of the first comic scripts he ever wrote. It had never been drawn until this collection was being put together. It takes a contemporary comic character and puts him in a 17th century setting, an idea Gaiman would return to.

His Swamp Thing stories that were drawn are also included here. Gaiman admits that he hadn’t found his own voice at the time (1989) but I would say that he found it very quickly, because in the same year he wrote the Hellblazer story “Hold Me”, which is a minor masterpiece and is the highlight of this collection.

The rest of the book consists of the lengthy 1995 one-off Sandman Midnight Theatre which brings together the old pulp Sandman and Gaiman’s Sandman (Dream of the Endless, definitely not a superhero). The action takes place at Fawney Rig, the setting of the first Sandman issue.
