The Writer: Sculpture in Hampstead Heath, London

Went to Hampstead Heath at the weekend. Near Kite Hill and Parliament Hill sits The Writer, a sculpture by Italian artist Giancarlo Neri. It's basically just a big table and chair. It's certainly rather startling....

The Terschelling and The Salvage of the Mary Rose



One of Henry VIII's warships, the Mary Rose lies at the bottom of the Solent, of Portsmouth. Last week, I noticed a salvage ship there, Terschelling, and later looked up this news article...

I was sailing on the Solent, off Portsmouth and Gosport last week, on board a 39ft yacht, with friends. As we made our way from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Gosport, I couldn't believe the amount of ship traffic - rush hour on a Sunday afternoon! Decommissioned warships, car ferries, racing yachts - you name it.

I visited Highgate Cemetery in London last weekend - was dismayed at first by the restrictions on photography, but was able to take quite a few images while I was. I was hindered by a lack of light, but made the most of it. The whole post-gothic Victorian necropolis is under siege by nature - when entering the Circle of Lebanon (a huge neo-Egyptian mausoleum complex) we even saw a fox. The tour was lead by a stout elderly gentlemen with a walking stick, who puffed and panted his way through the tour. I wondered if he himself would expire before the downhill section started. On a poignant note, it seems that his wife is buried in the cemetery...
