The cleansing of YouTube

youtube.jpgSo, it's finally started: the great cleansing of YouTube. It was only a matter of time really. I had often wondered when the lawyers would get busy and start clamping down on shared video content. 'This week' it seems, is the answer.

Two news stories have heralded what I am sure is the beginning of the end for the joyous wonder that was YouTube. Says the BBC Tech section:

'An independent website has been told to stop putting footage of FA Premiership goals on the video website YouTube. NetResult - a firm monitoring the internet on behalf of the Premier League - emailed a warning to the website, 101greatgoals.blogspot.com. It told the website it was "infringing" Premier League copyright. Links from 101greatgoals to YouTube were thought to have been disabled by YouTube itself but other links to Premiership goals stayed in place.'

This is, of course, hot on the heels of the news that YouTube (or GooTube, as we'll have to start calling it) culled 30,000 clips which were said to be infringing on the rights of Japanese companies.

'Video-sharing service YouTube has wiped nearly 30,000 files from its website after Japanese media companies said their copyright was being infringed. The Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers found 29,549 music video, movie and TV clips had been posted without permission.'

So, with the Google acquisition of YouTube we can now look forward to a far more sanitised digiweb experience: no more Japanders, no more vintage music videos and no more Cristiano Ronaldo flicks set to FatBoy Slim tunes. Well, for now anyway.

Which leads us to ask the Globaleyes question of the day: is Dailymotion.com the new YouTube? Or can you, the great unwashed, suggest other alternatives? Answers in a comment...

a broad range of videos, games, piccies etc...

gootube.net, a mashup of google maps and youtube real estate videos has been down for a week now. Could this be reason as well?

This is a wonderful first step but in my opinion they should remove all soccer clips from Youtube.

Stop cluttering up the website with soccer & hockey crap and I don't need to see any videos from Japan either.

They should just put stuff on there that a normal American would have some interest in viewing.
