'These are the stakes'

squirrel_terrorist.jpgSo says the repulsive new Republican Party advertisement which has been released ahead of the elections on November 7th. This phrase comes after a series of menacing quotes from Bin Laden and assorted other Al Qaeda cronies, set to a soundtrack of a ticking clock and a juddering heartbeat.

Make no mistake, they're getting desperate. Sex scandals, a growing body-count and the obvious bare-faced lies of an administration under pressure have all combined to lead to a volatile American electorate. And what do the Republicans do when the chips are down? What they've always done: scare people into voting for them.

As I said in a recent Globaleyes entry, there's nothing new in this. 'The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. Tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger'. So spoke Herman Goering. At the Nuremberg trials.

Frightening the living shit out of people with TV advertisements is nothing new in America of course. Witness the following 1964 advertisement for (Democratic candidate) Lyndon B. Johnson's Presidential campaign:

Daisy Girl 1964

Now watch the new 2006 Republican advertisement.

These are the Stakes

Nice to see that American politics has evolved so much, eh?

*Thanks*

My thanks to my filthy assistant miss w. tod, for pointing me towards the 1964 clip.

1.) I would have to agree with you on your theory of creating public panic to get re-elected. Just look at the 2004 elections. In the months leading up to the election, the security level in the country went up and down daily leaving people feeling unstable and scared. But right after the election it has barely moved at all with few exceptions or if it has, it hasn't been as broadcasted. It truly is a sad state of affairs.

2) I think I have seen that squirrel in my back yard - but can't be sure...
