Why is PornoTube better than YouTube?
Nope. That's not the opening salvo in a lame joke or an oh so knowing piece of satire, but an honest question.
How is it that Pornotube, the all-jiggling, all-wobbling porkfest which started out by aping the design of Youtube, now has a better design than the site on which it was based?
In order to see what Iwe're talking about, you'll have to go there and have a look. And yes, before you start moaning that's PornoTube. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Ye've been warned. Warned, we tell ye.
Now, on with the show.
Iconography
Pornotube was recently re-launched with a new look 'n' feel and a new strap-line which re-branded the site as a 'Sexperiment'. In addition to generally upping the ante, the design suggests a metadata-driven social network which will change the site from a digital wank-bank to something rather more cerebral. Ya ha.
But whatever about engineering the third great age of human wanking, what makes the site work far better than the now slightly tatty-looking YouTube, is the eye-catching and eminently sensible iconography used in the blog templates. Simple icons denoting, video, image and selected 'hot' content (fnaaar), make the interface twice as intuitive as anything else we've seen in a while. Begob, it's almost Apple-like in it's clinical, Kraftwerk finish.
Whereas Google saw the purchase of YouTube as an opportunity to ram yet more advertising down our necks, the bodies (whoever they are) behind Pornotube have seen fit to make their latest iteration an experiment in design - design which places metadata, tag clouds and smart searching facilities at the very centre of the user experience.
In point of fact, whilst YouTube has been slowly morphing into yet another bland corporate entity (just as Flickr has become) Pornotube has now come to represent the very essence of social bookmarking and 2.0 design aesthetics.
Oh and, apparently, there are naked people on it. So, be careful.
'More! More!'

in fairness I think Porn is still the bigest industry on the web, whereas things like youtube are in their infancy, there is a lot more competition in the porn industry so therefore there is more development money spent on things like this as having the best site gives a real monetary advantage in the porn industry.
