Crazy Baby Lady

She lived a liberal life
(a lovely life),
of music, books and beaches.
And she danced on warm nights
spinning fabulous lies
for rich (and
elderly) relatives.
During yoga weekends
she altered her perceptions
while detoxing
on dandelion tea.
And then she'd come back
to climb in the sack
with the prettiest (and
dirtiest) bright young things.
She chattered with friends
about her plans to spend
a year or two
hanging out in Paris.
But then one strange day
(as she sipped her Earl Grey)
suddenly
she began
to see
babies.
The first popped out
(with barely a twinge),
from a wedge
of camembert cheese.
The second-born splashed up
in her Phillipe Starke loo,
grasping
with its pudgy little hands.
The third and fourth born
(identical twins) burped out
of a blaring bus horn.
While baby number five
roared into its squalid
littlelife
from her B&O
surround-sound
multi-speakers.
Then babies,
(babies!)
everywhere! Slurping
in sewers and drains,
exploding from flowers
and dripping from showers
and plummeting
from passing
aeroplanes.
There were babies,
(babies!)
everywhere,
with their big blue eyes and stink…
Babies
(babies!)
everywhere -
it drove her straight
to drink.
The last babe flowed
(with its ten little toes)
fat and creamy
from a brassy-bright pump.
She knew she would cry
if she asked the question why
so she slurped down
a plump
and perfect thigh.
It was raining cots and buggies
when she closed her door that night
and stuffed the window cracks
with blue bootees.
Then she pierced her weeping nipples
with a shining nappy pin
and snorted up three lines
of talcum powder.
Her raw throat cracked with tickles
when she turned the gas to high.
so she swigged a drop or two
of pure gripe water.
And as the fumes filled up her head
one last noise
was all she heard…
The unique and slightly bitter
tiny spitter spatter
of bloody little feet
upon her
stairs.
