Damien DeBarra was born in the late 20th century and grew up in Dublin, Ireland. He now lives in London, England where he shares a house with four laptops, three bikes and a large collection of chairs.
Recently there’s been a guy DJing cassettes at our bar. His friends actually tape stuff onto cassette, giving all the music a noticeably different sound. This song in particular sounds fantastic this way.
I often feel the same way about vinyl – there’s a certain warmth to it you don’t get with digital.
Well, things are mastered differently for vinyl than CD. Beware of vinyl releases where the recording was only mastered for CD, and vice versa. Anyway, with cassette there’s actually a drop in sound quality, and the pitching will always vary depending on the speed at which the tape goes round (meaning that the speed of the music can vary from tape machine to tape machine, something I experienced many times when I had a cassette collection). Losing a lot of the digital quality of the Battles track makes it sound much more punk/new wave. The drums and bass are more… thundery!
Good tune, once you get over the pinky & perky vocal.
