Fram

nansenThis bust of polar explorer Fritjof Nansen can be seen in Frammuseet, the Oslo museum that contains his ship, the Fram. The basic facts about the ship are: it was built by Colin Archer (a Norwegian of Scottish descent), it was launched in 1892, it's 39 metres long, its "depth maindeck to keel" is 4.75 metres, and it has sailed further North and further South than any other "conventional vessel" - North latitude 85° 57' and South latitude 78° 41'. The Fram's special egg-shaped hull allows it "to be lifted by the ice pressure instead of being crushed."

Welcome to New Tokyo

se oppIt hit the news a few weeks ago: Oslo has now overtaken Tokyo as the most expensive city in the world. This was based on a survey of the cost of living by the Economist Intelligence Unit. So what does it mean to be in the most expensive place on Earth?

This week I went to the funeral of a woman I worked with in London. Her husband was Norwegian, so the funeral was here in Oslo. When I think of the nice things she had said to me before I moved here, and of her love for Norway, it was obvious to me she would have liked me to attend.
