Welcome to New Tokyo

se oppIt hit the news a few weeks ago: Oslo has now overtaken Tokyo as the most expensive city in the world. This was based on a survey of the cost of living by the Economist Intelligence Unit. So what does it mean to be in the most expensive place on Earth?

Well, a beer in Mu will cost you the equivalent of 6 euro, and that's a very reasonable price in Norway, you know! And food? The local Thai sells 2 spring rolls with sweet and sour sauce for the equivalent of about three and a half Euro, to give a random example that I don't even understand myself.

But although rampant, uncontrollable spending sprees may be out of the question, it's not impossible to be a little on the poor side here. I know for a fact that you can live on the equivalent of 500 euro a month in Oslo, so it's no big deal, in my opinion.

The thing about many expensive cities, like Tokyo, London, New York or Paris, is that they are "global cities". Is it now time for Oslo to "go global"? Will the Scandinavian Gojira now stamp its feet?

These are the kind of thoughts that don't keep me awake at night.
